BEIJING, Feb. 16 — Recent years have seen the growing popularity of Chinese board games. Among the most popular is the Killers of Three Kingdoms, which has a market share of more than 80 percent. However, the new industry also faces a threat to its future development.
Chinese board games are taking off.
The Killers of Three Kingdoms represents a milestone in the market. Since it was created in 2007, the game has become very popular among youngsters.
Its content is based on the storyline from one of the four most famous Chinese classics,The Romance ofThe Three Kingdoms.
Du Bin, Inventor ofThe Killers of Three Kingdoms, said, “We invented the game by combining different stories from Chinese literature. The way of playing matches the Chinese way of thinking. The reaction from the market has been very good.”
The success of the Killers of Three Kingdoms beats other board games. Seats in board game clubs are very hard to book.
A board game player said, “My friends suggested I play board games. I find them lots of fun. And the prices are acceptable.”
Board game clubs are also benefiting from the fast developing market.
An owner of board game club said, “Our income is growing at the rate of 30 percent a year. It’s good.”
However, Chinese board games are facing a bottleneck in their development. Most games are partially or even completely copied from overseas games which gives the industry little impetus in being creative.
